golf gifts _ golf handicap software

Father’s Day is fast approaching and if you’re like many of us, you still haven’t thought of what kind of gift to give your father this year. It’s okay, however, there is still time to get your father an amazing gift that will truly make this Father’s Day one of the most memorable ones yet.  Continue reading below to discover five must-have golf inspired gift ideas that you can do in 2020.

Buy a Round of Golf

If your father has a certain day of the week that he likes to play golf, you can go ahead and pre-pay for a round at one of his favorite courses and surprise him with it on Father’s Day. Every golfer loves free green fees, so a pre-paid round of golf is sure to put a smile on his face. A great and easy resource to browse discounted tee times for multiple courses at once is minutegolf.ca. It’s hard to find a better gift than that for a golf loving father.

Golf Lessons

Does your father love playing golf, but then often comes home after each round complaining about how poorly he played? Well help your father out by purchasing him a set of golf lessons from a local golf instructor. Again, you can find many amazing deals for golf lessons through your local course pro shops and websites. This is a gift that will benefit your father year-round by helping improve his game.

Some New Golf Gear

Let’s be honest, most fathers could use a little help in keeping their wardrobe up to date with the latest fashion trends and that includes their golf attire. Fortunately, the golf clothing industry is booming at the moment and caters to golfers of all ages. If you want your father to be looking cool, and staying cool, on the course this season, check out some of the clothing from brands like Travis Matthews, Under Armour, Nike, or Peter Millar, which can often be found in your local course’s pro shop.

Shoe Cleaning & Spike Change

For a more inexpensive gift idea, consider taking your father’s golf shoes to the local course pro shop and asking them for a good cleaning and a spike change. Most courses provide this service ranging from anywhere between $10-$25. Changing golf spikes is one thing that most golfers often overlook, despite the fact that having new spikes on your shoes is what provides most of our balance throughout our golf swing. This will be an unexpected gift idea, but one that your father will absolutely appreciate.

Customized Golf Balls

If you want to give your father a tangible gift that he will have fun opening up this year, a dozen customized golf balls are always a fun gift idea. Does your father have a nickname? A favorite saying? His own business? Whatever it is that makes your father unique, you can have it printed onto his favorite kind of golf ball through many different custom golf ball websites. This gift is something he will surely cherish and he will think of you every time he tees-up one of his new custom golf balls.

Five Things Golfers Should Know About The New World Handicap System | golf handicap software

If you are a frequent golfer, you’re well aware of the term “handicap” when it comes to quantifying your skill level. For example, a person who on average shoots a 90 on a par 72 course would be considered a “+18” handicap, as this would reflect that they typically shoot around 18 strokes over par. If you typically shoot 72 on a par 72, then you would be considered a zero handicap (otherwise known as a “scratch” golfer). But how does one determine their handicap?

Well there are currently six different handicap systems in the world, so it can be a bit confusing depending on the system you or your local course uses. To help avoid this confusion, golf is implementing a universal handicapping system known as the “World Handicap System” (WHS). As golf is a game played all around the world, it seems logical. But what should you as an amateur know about this new system? Well here are five key items to know about the new WHS.

1. The WHS Launched in January 2020

Yes, to the surprise of many who are just hearing this, the WHS launched in the United States and Canada in January of this new year. Rest assured, you’ll have your WHS handicap index available to you once golf season starts, as courses around the country will be implementing it this year.

2. All Handicap Indexes Will Reflect an 18-hole Handicap

Under the former Canada Handicap System, it was possible for players to have both a nine-hole handicap index and 18-hole handicap index. Under the World Handicap System, a player will only have an 18-hole handicap index.  This helps ensure that each player has only one true Handicap and helps prevent players with only a nine-hole handicap from being at a disadvantage when playing in an 18-hole tournament. This move ensures every player is on a more even playing field, which is truly what the World Handicap System wants to achieve.

3. The WHS is More Accurate Than Other Systems

Under the WHS, the handicap index is determined based on only 8 of the last 20 rounds that you’ve posted to the system. This allows for more current, low scores to have a larger effect on the index and thus keeping sandbaggers (i.e., people who purposely try to keep a higher handicap than their actual skill level dictates) at bay… hopefully.

4. Weather and Course Conditions Will Adjust Your Posted Score

Have you ever played a course in high winds or rainy conditions that drastically affected your score? Well under the WHS, the system will take into account the course conditions at the time that you played and accurately make overnight adjustments to ensure that it doesn’t balloon that pristine handicap you’ve been working so hard to establish. This really is a great (and practical) new feature.

5. Just Another Reason to Finally Establish Your Handicap

While golfers in Canada have always had the Golf Canada Score Center to establish their handicap, not every golfer has taken advantage of the service because of the confusion and requirements to establish an accurate handicap index. The WHS makes the task much more streamlined and allows golfers to establish and maintain a handicap with ease.

If you don’t already have an established handicap and aren’t currently a member at any golf club, you can register directly with Golf Canada. Have fun, and no sand-bagging!

Caddyshack | Top 5 Golf Movies To Watch

With golf courses remaining closed for the time being, many of us are going to be watching A LOT of movies over the spring. With us missing golf so much, why not throw in some golf movies? Today we are going to discuss some of the greatest golf movies ever made and provide you with a quick reference list when you need a movie suggestion. Now some of these movies are more serious than others, but they are all certainly all-time classics. If you select a movie from one of the five listed below, there is no way you can go wrong. So get your popcorn ready while we go over the top five golf movies to watch while stuck indoors.

5. The Greatest Game Ever Played

This movie depicts a young, talented golfer in the early 20th century that struggles to gain respect or even a real shot given his low economic means in a sport that was reserved only for the privileged in that time. Starring Shia Labeouf (pre-meltdown), this movie provides amazing acting and cinematography.

4. Happy Gilmore

If you’re in the mood for a comedy, you cannot go wrong with ‘Happy Gilmore’. A hockey player (who can’t skate) becomes a professional golfer in order to try and save his grandmother’s house from being foreclosed. Led by his natural long-drive ability, goofy swing, and legendary coach (“Chubbs”), Happy Gilmore tries to score low and defeat his nemesis, Shooter McGavin. This movie is sure to take you to your happy place.

3. The Short Game (Documentary)

‘The Short Game’ is a documentary film that follows eight highly talented junior golfers and their stories as they all gather to compete at the 2012 U.S. Kids Golf World Championships at the fabled Pinehurt Golf Club. This is a SXSW Film Festival award winning documentary. It will, however, make you feel bad about your own golf game once you see just how good these little kids are.

2. Tin Cup

Kevin Costner is the master of sports movies and his character in ‘Tin Cup’ only further proves that. ‘Tin Cup’ is about an uber-talented driving range pro named Roy McAvoy (ironically close to Rory McIlroy, right?) that could never just get out of his own way to achieve golf glory. Can he turn play it safe just one time in order to win? Or will he continue going for it and risking it all? This is seriously a classic golf movie and must watch.

1. Caddyshack

What else were you expecting to be listed as number one here? ‘Caddyshack’ is the epitome of golf movies and has yet to be topped since it first hit theatres in 1980. There are too many memorable characters at Bushwood Country Club to go into detail here, but with actors like Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield, you are sure to be laughing throughout this cinematic classic.

Honorable Mentions: Legend of Bagger Vance; Bobby Jones: The Stroke of Genius; Three Little Beers

Three Signs That You’re Ready to Upgrade to A New Driver | golf management software

One of the most famous golf quotes ever is the classic, “You drive for show, but you putt for dough.”  While this alludes to the fact that our golf scores are most highly dictated by our putting abilities (which is actually pretty accurate), sometimes it’s just nice to smash one off the tee… even if it is just for show. Of course that leads to another famous golf quote from the movie Tin Cup that states sometimes you just “have to let the big dog eat.” But what if you’re not hitting your driver well or you’re far more confident hitting iron off the tee? Well it may be time for you to invest in a new driver.

Below are the three telltale signs that you’re ready to upgrade to a new driver. Do any of these sound familiar to you? If so, it’s time to upgrade.

1. You Lack Confidence In Your Driver On The Tee-box

If you find yourself nervous to tee off on the first tee box because of the usual crowd of people that tend to gather near first tee-boxes, then it’s obvious you need to upgrade to a new driver.  There is no reason with all the different styles and technologies available in drivers today that you should have the jitters on the number one tee box.

Instead, you should feel ready and confident that you’re going to show off by hitting a nice, booming drive right down the middle of the fairway. A new driver can give you that confidence.

2. Your Driver is Over 5+ Years Old

Unless you absolutely crush one of your older drivers and have great confidence in it, you should be upgrading your driver about every five years at a minimum. While a putter may be reliable for an entire golf lifetime, a driver cannot be.

Drivers, more than any other club in golf, are improved constantly with technology advancements and designs that optimize speed, distance and control. Simply put, if you’re playing with an older driver, you are missing out on an opportunity to immediately improve your game.

3. You Don’t Use a Headcover on Your Driver

This may sound silly, but hear me out. If you don’t bother protecting your driver by using a headcover when you’re off the course, then you’re risking damage to your driver at any given moment. This disregard for potential damage and/or scratches reveals that there is no emotional investment in that driver. If you don’t care about your driver enough to protect it, then it’s clear that you need a different driver.

Once you upgrade to a new driver that gives you confidence and allows you to hit bombs off the tee, you’ll want to guard it with your life. That’s the kind of relationship you deserve with your driver and one that you’ll have if you upgrade to a driver that’s a perfect fit for your game and swing.

If you fit into one of the categories above, we recommend taking some time and visiting your local pro shop (or shopping online if possible) and browse the driver selections. Ask for a “demo driver” to test out on the range if you’d like. There are many types of drivers out there so you just have to find one that fits you best!

Which Golf Clubs Should You Have In Your Golf Bag | golf software

As a golfer reading this, you are likely aware that the rules of golf permit each player to carry no-more than 14 clubs in their bag for any given round. Having a limit on the number of clubs allows golfers to use strategic planning to determine which combination of clubs they will carry in their bag. Some of the important things to consider when determining which 14 clubs you have in your bag are: your playing ability; (2) the course layout/condition; and (3) confidence.

If you’re unsure whether you are carrying the right clubs in your bag, we have a quick guide here to provide a quick reference to help you decide.

The Common 12 Clubs

Most amateur golfers carry the same standard 12 clubs in their bag which are:

  • (1) driver;
  • (2) 3-wood
  • (3) 5-wood
  • (4-11) 3-iron through 9-iron
  • (12) putter

The final two clubs are generally a combo of pitching wedges with differing lofts. Just because that’s the common combination, doesn’t mean that you need to follow it. You may want to consider the following three items when determining how to customize your 14-club combination.

The Three Wedge System

If you’re blessed with power off the tee and/or with your irons, it should allow you a little more freedom in deciding which clubs you carry. For example, players that can crush their drivers do not often have to carry a 5-wood, so they’d rather keep three different wedges (i.e., 46-degree, 52-degree and 58-degree). This is sometimes referred to as a “three wedge system.” The reason is that on most amateur courses, a big hitter off the tee will hit the majority of their shots from within 150 yards on their second shot on par 4’s.

Even if you’re not the biggest hitter off the tee, if you know you’re playing on a shorter course with many shots within 150 yards, consider the three-wedge system.

The Hybrid v. Iron Conundrum

For many amateur golfers, having to hit a 3-iron or 4-iron is a terrifying experience. If that resonates with you, don’t worry. The lower lofted irons are commonly known as the hardest clubs to hit for the majority of golfers (even the pros). If you struggle with these clubs, consider switching over to hybrids and carry multiple hybrids that you hit relatively the same distance as your 3 and 4-irons. The hybrids are typically easier to hit for amateur golfers and thus will give you more confidence in those longer distance iron type shots.

Specialty Clubs

The last item to consider are those specialty clubs that you sometimes see in commercials or your local pro shops. One of the most popular specialty clubs is “the chipper.” Essentially the chipper is a very low lofted wedge that looks more like a putter. The chipper is designed to produce a natural bump and run shot, while allowing the player to make a simple putting stroke.

Final Tip

Whatever combination you decide on, just make sure it instills confidence in your game. Good luck!

While the game of golf itself has remained essentially the same for many generations now, the technology used in golf has grown immensely year by year. It’s very clear that golf has fully embraced the tech movement to help improve the game and make each round more enjoyable for its players. So, what are the main golf gadget trends for 2020?

Today, we’ll take a quick look at five of the most fun golf gadgets that every player should know about heading into the 2020 golf season.

5. GPS Golf Watches/Mobile Apps

Remember the days when golfers used to have to find an actual physical yardage marker on the course (usually designated by a 150-yard pole in the fairway) to estimate how far away from the hole they were?

Well it’s not shocking that nowadays there are many different options to help cure this inconvenience.

Two of the best GPS technologies are:

  1. Smart watches that are designed specifically to provide you with the exact yardage
  2. Mobile apps that you can download to provide you with an accurate GPS reading before each shot.

Both serve the same purpose, but the watches actually look pretty cool and can be a conversation piece on the first-tee as well.

4. SKLZ Gold Flex Golf Swing Trainer

This SKLZ gadget swing trainer is about as archaic as it can get for a golf training tool, but don’t let that stop you from procuring one of these bad boys. With its weighted design, this gadget encourages and trains your muscles to swing smoothly and in a nice rhythm.

If you struggle with over-swinging and/or pulling the ball off the tee, it could be as simple as correcting your tempo. This simple gadget can help do just that.

3. Smartphone Swing Analyzer

If you’re looking for a more technologically advanced form of swing help than the SKLZ trainer listed above, then look no further than your own smart phone application store. Most smartphones have numerous applications that allow you to record your swing and analyze it in slow motion to reveal your swing mechanics and swing plane.

One of the most popular such applications out in 2020 is the Zepp Swing Analyzer. This product is great and will allow you to gather data on all parts of your game and swing. Feel like a pro with your own swing analyzer technology.

2. Robotic Pull Carts

One of the most fun technological advancements in golf has been the exploding market for new pull carts that essentially pull themselves. This allows golfers to walk the courses hands free just like the professionals do.

The Stewart X9 golf trolley is one that is designed to run on Bluetooth, so it will literally follow you around the course so long as you keep your phone in your pocket. Talk about a new excuse to walk instead of ride!

1. Bag Boy Solar Charger

We will keep this final gadget pretty simple. Most of us experience long rounds while out at the local popular municipal courses. If you’re like me and enjoy listening to music on your phone while playing, then you probably have experienced a dead phone battery many times by the time you finish the round.

The bag boy solar charger attaches to your golf bag or golf cart and takes in UV rays from the sun to provide charging power to your portable devices. It may not be the most exciting gadget, but it is definitely a must have.

Five Tips To Make 2020 Your Best Golf Year Yet

With the PGA Tour’s warm weather, and the west-coast swing in effect right now, it probably has you itching to get back out on the course yourself. Unfortunately, mother nature isn’t as kind to most regions of North America at this time of year. So if you’re still snowed in, take a second to picture what you want this upcoming golf season to be like. Can you visualize anything specific that you want to achieve in 2020? If you’re having trouble coming up with ideas, don’t worry as that is why we’re sharing the following tips with you.

Keep reading for our five tips to make 2020 the best golf year yet.

1. Practice Makes Perfect

The saying “practice makes perfect” is a great quote, but it doesn’t apply in a literal sense to golf because golf is a game that cannot be perfected (not even by Tiger Woods). While perfection is unachievable, spending more time working on your golf game on the practice range and putting greens is sure to help improve your skills and scores. As we all know, the better you play, the more fun the round generally is.

2. Take a Golf Trip

If you have ever dreamt of playing golf in warm, tropical weather there is no better time than 2020 to take a golf getaway. Golf trips are the best types of vacations that a golf lover can do and you owe it to yourself to finally do it. One of the best destinations for a golf trip is the Caribbean as it’s near perfect weather year round. Playing in a tropical climate surrounded by beaches on your downtime will also have you feeling more relaxed when you do hit the greens.

3. Get New Clubs

Another great way to make 2020 the best golf year yet is to ensure that it is finally the year that you buy those new golf clubs you’ve had your eye on. New clubs help inspire confidence and a feeling of satisfaction. Keep in mind that you don’t have to invest in an entire new golf set, but rather you could upgrade your driver, putter, or even purchase a new pitching wedge. It’ll give you a little boost to get yourself pumped up to hit the links again.

4. Join a Golf Club

One of the greatest aspects of golf is that it brings people together where they can talk and bond over their love of the game. You never know who you’ll meet when you get paired in a random foursome at your local golf club. Well, why not expand on that concept by joining a local golfing club or league? This will provide a fun and exciting social group to keep you accountable and focused on golf. Look at your local golf courses for weekly golf groups/clubs to join.

5. Play More Golf

This last tip is very simple. Play as much golf as you possibly can in 2020 and enjoy every minute of it. One way to play more golf is to find better deals and save more money on tee times at your local courses. Find these great deals and packages at Minutegolf and get ready for the greatest golf year of your life!

Top Five Caribbean Golf Courses For a Winter Getaway | golf software

Dreaming of warmer weather, white sand beaches, refreshing cocktails, and world class golf courses? Well make those dreams become a reality by taking a winter vacation to one of the most beautiful regions the world has to offer - the Caribbean. Although there is an abundance of fun things to do in the Caribbean, we know you’re craving some golf right now, so we’ll focus on the top five golf courses that would make an epic winter getaway complete for any golf lover.

Before you finish reading this, you’ll be wanting to pack your bags and hop on the next available flight to the Caribbean. Who knows, maybe you can get a tee time with Captain Jack Sparrow while you’re there.

5. Punta Espada Golf Club (Dominican Republic)

The Dominican Republic, to the surprise of many, is home to several world class golf courses, including Punta Espada Golf Club in Punta Cana. This golf course is designed by the legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus and is located right on the shoreline. As of this writing, it’s still possible to play Punta Espada (for a hefty green fee), but rumor has it that this course may soon become a private facility.

4. The Tryall Club (Jamaica)

One of the most popular Caribbean destinations is Jamaica. If you’ve always desired to take a vacation to this dreamy island oasis, then make sure you add The Tryall Club to your to-do list. The Tryall Club is a beautiful, but difficult course located just outside of Montego Bay (where many of the major resorts are located). This is unquestionably the best golf course Jamaica has to offer.

3. TPC Dorado Beach – East (Puerto Rico)

Anytime you have an opportunity to play a TPC course, you know that it is going to be a high-quality experience. The East course at TPC Dorado Beach has hosted the prestigious World Cup golf tournament twice, first in 1961 and again in 1994. You can imagine that you are representing your country while playing this world class golf course.

2. The Mid Ocean Club (Bermuda)

Revered as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda ranks about as high as a course can get on many golfers’ “bucket list.” Besides the fact that the course itself is world class, the scenery that surrounds the Mid Ocean Club is truly breathtaking and is often described as “heavenly.” Just a heads-up, however, the Mid Ocean Club only allows public golfers on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

1. Casa de Campo (Dominican Republic)

Did I mention that the Dominican Republic has some of the best golf courses in the entire world? Well Casa de Campo (also known as “Teeth of the Dog”) is always listed as one of the top golf destinations in the world and is the top golf course in the Caribbean. This course was designed by Pete Dye, who is arguably the greatest golf architect to ever live. Dye turned this coastal setting into an incredibly beautiful, yet difficult golf course. If you ever get to play here, we’ll be incredibly jealous.

There you have it. Those are our top five Caribbean golf courses, but please know that there are countless other amazing golf options located in the region. Grab your shorts and tee shirts and head on down to the Caribbean this winter!

This will give you a better indicator of how strong your game is from the tee-box, the green or even the bunker.

Sherbrooke In The Spring

Club de golf sherbrooke | golf tee time reservation software

While you can certainly enjoy Sherbrooke in the winter, be sure to return to the course in spring to truly experience all it has to offer. The club has enjoyed 90 years of golf for a reason, as it offers a unique atmosphere with a superior playing surface.

With mature trees and valleys scattered throughout the course, the 18-hole course challenges all golfers. The course recently swapped the first and tenth holes to give visitors and members a better visibility of the first hole’s tee-off spot. It also improved accessibility to the 10th hole when you’re entering the back nine. The course also added some wrinkles to the 18th hole, adding two sand traps for one last challenge before you finish your round.

Golf Habits You Can Build During The Winter | golf tee time reservation

Although the upcoming golf season is hard to see right now through all the snow, sleet, freezing rain and frigid temperatures, it will be here before you know it. So now is the time to start building some new golf habits that will prove to be extremely beneficial come the spring and summer months.

Listed below are five golf habits that you can build (indoors) during the harsh days of winter. If you can incorporate these five golf habits now, you will see a major improvement on your scorecard this coming golf season.

1. Develop a 5 to 10 Minute Stretching Routine

Flexibility is an often-overlooked part of a golfer’s game. The more flexible and limber you are, the more ease you will have in your backswing and follow through, thus allowing you to gain more club speed (if you’d like) and generate extra yards off the tee-box.

Now is the time to build a 5-10-minute stretching routine that incorporates stretching your shoulder muscles, back muscles, upper leg muscles (no, you don’t have to “activate your glutes” like Tiger Woods) and ending with some gentle neck rolls.

The 5-10-minute mark is perfect as it is something you can incorporate everyday and will be easy to replicate on short notice prior to taking the first tee on days you play.

2. Make 10 3-5 Foot Putts In A Row

Missing short, makeable putts is the #1 scorecard killer for amateur golfers. On the scorecard, a five-foot putt counts the same as a 300-yard drive, so it’s important to develop confidence with your putter. By making 10 3-5 foot putts in a row, you continuously see the ball going in the hole (which helps gain confidence) and it helps your concentration grow on these shorter putts as you don’t want to miss and have to start over again. This can be done at home with an inexpensive putting matt or even just a drinking glass on carpet (old school!).

3. Practice Your Swing In a Mirror

This may sound like a strange idea but having a mirror that you can see yourself taking practice swings in is a great concept to incorporate. By watching yourself in the mirror, you can see your swing from different angles that aren’t normally available. This is especially great for players trying to develop new swing planes and/or attack angles. Spending as little as 5 minutes a day watching your swing is a great habit to start now. This can also be done by recording yourself on your cellphone.

4. Read One Golf Rule Each Day

While you’re sitting cozy indoors by the fire this winter, take the time to research one new USGA golf rule every day. While this may sound mundane, it’s critically important that you know the rules of golf, especially with the new additions to the rules regarding pace of play for amateurs. This will also keep you from becoming the Patrick Reed of your foursome.

5. Walk One Kilometre A Day

By walking a kilometre a day, you keep your body physically fit and your mind refreshed. This brisk walking routine will help you on the golf course as you will not become fatigued as easily at the end of a round. While it helps to have access to an indoor treadmill for this, even marching in place in front of the television for 10 minutes a day will make a noticeable difference.

Start making new habits today and you will reap the benefits when the temperatures start rising in a few short months. Good luck!
