Another year is coming to an end. In fact, this year marks the end of a decade making it even more fitting to take a moment to reflect. Take some time to remember your accomplishments, as well as hardships, over the past 10 years and how they have made you the person you are today. This New Year’s is a great opportunity to set some new goals and resolutions for yourself and how you want this new, exciting decade to go. This also includes your golf game.
On that note, let’s go through our five New Year’s Resolutions for golfers as we head into 2020.
Resolution #1: “I Will Spend More Time At The Practice Range”
This list would be meaningless if we didn’t start with the fundamental resolution that every golfer needs: More Practice! If you really want to improve your golf game next calendar year, it all starts on the practice range. Admittedly, practice is not nearly as fun as playing 18 holes, but it is more effective in improving your game. A good goal to set is 80-100 practice balls, three times a week. Resolution #2: “No More Three Putts”
The quickest way to improve your scores is to be lethal with your putter. A golfer that has confidence in their putter can quickly shave 3-5 strokes off their scorecard just by minimizing those costly three putts. Again, the only way to improve your stroke and gain confidence is to practice until it becomes second nature. To help, here are a few putting practice routines that you can perform at home during the winter.
Resolution #3: “I Will Buy That New Driver That I’ve Always Wanted”
Golf clubs can be very expensive, we get it. But if you have been eyeing a specific driver for some time now, make it a resolution that you will save some extra money each month and put it towards a “new driver fund.” While doing this, always watch for sales (especially during the golf off-seasons). Before you know it, you will have that new, beautiful driver in your hands and be hitting bombs off the #1 tee box.
Resolution #4: “I Will Not Be My Own Harshest Critic”
Golf is a unique sport in that you don’t have anybody else to blame but yourself whenever you don’t play well. It’s easy to be discouraged in golf and get angry but try to just enjoy the game and the struggles that go along with it in 2020. Just remember, you get to spend time outdoors on some beautiful terrains and get to play one of the greatest sports ever invented. Life is good… even if you did just get an 8 on that last par 3.

Although several of these resolutions revolve around the need to practice more in 2020, it also goes without saying that you should strive to play as much golf as you can this coming year. There are many beautiful places you could go throughout the world, but we will keep this list situated to just North America for ease of travel sake. Regardless, the five destination vacations listed below are absolutely perfect for golf in the winter, so trade the snow shovel for your 7-iron and enjoy a golf getaway.
5. Southern California
Ahh yes, good ol’ Southern California was sure to make this list as it has perfect weather nearly year round. More specifically, San Diego, Orange County, and Palm Springs are the premier golf hot spots of the region. In San Diego, you can play 18 holes in the morning and then spend the rest of the afternoon lounging on the beach.

4. Florida
Anywhere in Florida can provide you with great golf as the air is warm and the grass is green all winter long. 2. Northern California
While the weather in Northern California can often be a little gloomy and wet during the winter season, this is the prime time to hit some of the most beautiful golf landscapes in the entire world. The Monterrey/Pebble Beach region is especially breathtaking. Although a golf trip to this region will never be considered cheap, the wintertime is the non-peak time when it comes to pricing.
1. Phoenix, Arizona
Many people think of golf in Arizona and their minds immediately recall The Waste Management Open (aka the Phoenix Open) and the infamous 16th hole. Well a golf trip to Arizona in the winter is almost just as fun as the spirit that hole provides. The weather is typically around 22 Celsius (70 F) and the golf courses are in prime conditions. Arizona also has hundreds of courses to choose from that fit all types of budgets. Do yourself a favor and take a desert vacation this winter.

Let’s face it; winter is upon us. The temperatures are dropping, snow is falling and Christmas tree lots are starting to open for business. While the winter can be beautiful, it certainly does no favors to your golf game. But just because your local golf course is covered in snow, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still hit some practice balls and/or enjoy a round with your buddies. The only catch is that you will have to do it inside and via a golf simulator. Over the past decade, golf simulator technology has grown immensely. Machines now get more accurate readings of your swings and you can virtually play a full round of golf, while staying warm.

This retails at approximately $150 on Amazon and is a quick and cheap way to get some practice in within the comfort of your own home this winter. If you want, you could deck it out even more by adding a projector and projector screen to show the images from your computer on a bigger area. Will this actually improve your game over the winter? It could, but more importantly it will provide a golfing opportunity in the winter.

Golf is a sport that requires a lot of practice if you want to consistently play well. One issue is that most of us don’t have time to spend an hour or two practicing every day. The good news is that there is a way to shave a few strokes off your score that doesn’t require going to the driving range to practice. It’s called putting practice! The best part about it is that you can practice putting anywhere. With winter right around the corner, the next few months will be crucial in ensuring you’re a better golfer for the 2020 season.
Below are a few simple putting drills that you can do for five to ten minutes in your home, your office and virtually anywhere else!
1. Quarter Cup
It’s as simple as it sounds. Place a quarter on the ground and use that as your target. Hit putts from different distances, but try to keep it within 10 feet for this drill. The point of this drill is to increase your confidence by changing your mental space over makeable putts. If you can hit a putt and drill a quarter, then you can certainly drain a putt in a normal size golf cup from that same distance. This drill will make the cup look like an ocean in your next round.
2. Left-Right-Center Drill
To perform this drill, you will need a putter, a few balls, and a target (i.e., a cup, piece of paper, etc...). Set the target about five to seven feet away and place a few balls down on the ground. Start by gripping your putter with just your strong hand and perform your putting stroke one handed. Continue this until you can hit the center of the target at least five times in a row with just your strong hand. Once you do this, switch to your other hand and repeat. Practicing with one hand like this improves your hand-eye coordination and the consistency of your putting stroke.
3. Distance Control
This drill is designed to help improve your distance control from 10-footers all the way to lag putting. While this works best on a carpet, you can do this on any surface. The first step is to place a sheet of printer paper (8x11) on the ground, which will serve as your target. Then hit a few putts at the piece of paper from 10 feet and try to get each ball to stop on the paper. Then move back to 15 feet. Then to 20. Keep doing this for as far as you’d like or as far as your room allows. It may seem like a stupid drill, but it will improve your distance control dramatically.
4. Work on Your Tempo
One of the keys to golf, and especially putting, is tempo. If you have smooth and consistent tempo, you will start to see a lot more putts dropping throughout your golf rounds. To work on your tempo, simply grab your putter and start to swing it back and forth like you would a normal putt on the course. Then start to focus on the timing and be consistent with it. The smoother the better.
You can do these drills during commercial breaks while you watch your favorite show or take a five-minute break at work and perform these drills in your office. If you can do these drills consistently, you’ll improve dramatically over the winter and stun your golf buddies next spring. Happy putting!

GGGolf aims to share industry knowledge and better understand golf courses’ needs
While golf season may be winding down, that doesn’t mean GGGolf has slowed down. This month, GGGolf attended the Golf Quebec FundraiserTournament, The Canadian Society of Clubs Managers National Conference and the 7th Annual BPG Buying Group Show. All events are valuable in allowing GGGolf to connect with industry professionals and assess where we can better serve the needs of golf courses. We also relished the opportunity to share what GGGolf’s plans are for the future.
About the CSCM
The CSCM is the biggest association of club managers in Canada, mostly representing private clubs. Not only does the CSCM cater to golf clubs, but also social, tennis, country and city clubs. This year’s event took place in London, ON.
GGGolf was present at the event with our own booth and it gave us an excellent opportunity to engage with club managers. GGGolf President Gilles Gauthier and Lise Beaudet, head of customer service, were both present at the conference. In attending and participating at the CSCM, GGGolf was able to gain a better understanding of emerging club management needs, the biggest challenges facing the industry and determine how we can help golf clubs moving forward.

The 7th annual BPG Buying Group Show took place from October 15-18 at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata, ON. This show allows golf pros and staff to discover and order the latest gear and apparel available for next golf season. The BPG Buying Group also held a gala rewarding the best pros, golf shops and suppliers in different regions around the country as well as an annual golf tournament. The GGGolf team consisting of Gauthier, Beaudet, Katherine Lauriault and Catherine Gauthier attended, along with Jodi Newfield, from GGGolf’s sister company DockMaster in West Palm Beach, Florida, to network with proshop managers and clients. It was a pleasure for the GGGolf team to meet with clients and all the other players from the Canadian Golf industry.
The BPG Buying Group consists of over 150 pro shops in Canada. The BPG group uses GGGolf to manage their members, billing and invoices.

After having attended both these incredible events, GGGolf feels we’ll be better suited to serve golf courses with our golf management software next season and beyond.

We have all seen the shot tracer technology when watching PGA Tour events. You know the red line that follows the ball from contact to the ground so that us, the audience, is able to actually see the shot path. Well, the Shot Tracer app puts this technology in your hands via its smartphone application. Just take a video of your shot and let the app do the rest of the work. This is great to save videos with this and post to social media.

The V1 golf app is arguably the best smartphone application on the market right now if you’re looking for a tool to help analyze your golf swing. This app allows you to take slow motion videos of your swing and use them to analyze your swing plane, body motions, and ball striking. With this app, you can also pay extra to have golf lessons sent directly to your phone, which is a great resource to have.

This is a great app in general for many reasons, but I’m including it on this list because of its easy golf betting settings. If you want to raise the stakes with your friend for your next round, simply open this app and pick your game and the application will help do the rest. This is a fun and easy to use app.

There are three words that scare both Game of Thrones fans and golfers alike: “Winter Is Coming.” Yes, given that unfortunately, we don’t live in a year-round golfing climate, those three little words can feel like a dagger to your golf game. With winter being an unavoidable part of life in Canada, it’s best to be prepared for it and that is why we have created an article to use as a pseudo checklist to go through when preparing your golf bag for winter storage.
Just follow these simple steps to help swap your golf bag for your winter coats.
Step 1: Give Your Golf Bag a Thorough Cleaning
It was a long, warm golf season and (hopefully) you enjoyed many pleasurable golf rounds during from spring to autumn. The summer months can bring some wear and tear to your golf equipment so it’s important to give it a good cleaning/inspection before putting it into storage for the winter. Yep, take everything out of your bag (clubs, balls, etc), and give everything a quick cleaning. This is a must-do because not only will it help keep your golf clubs in good condition, it will also provide you with a sparkling clean bag and clubs when spring rolls around. This also helps prepare you for Step 2.
Step 2: Take Some Golf Bag Inventory
When you take everything out of your bag to complete the cleaning in Step 1, use this time to do a quick inventory check of everything in your bag. Do you really need those old score cards? Should you take your rain gear out in case you would like to wear some of it during the winter? Lastly, make a list of items that you need to restock so that you can take advantage of “off-season” prices by purchasing them during the winter.

The final step I would recommend is putting everything into a single travel bag (the big cargo looking bags that you use to check your golf clubs onto a plane) to keep all of your golf related items in one convenient spot. Include your bag, shoes, equipment, and anything else you won’t need until next Spring. This style of storage will also keep your golf gear safe from unexpected inclement weather conditions.
