Welcome to the 2019 golf season. The weather is nice, the grass is green, and your golf bag is all stocked up and ready to go. 1. Crossover Clothing

The term “crossover clothing” essentially refers to clothing that can fulfill multiple social scenarios. Think of clothing that would be appropriate on the golf course, but would also be considered trendy enough to go straight from the course to the local nightlife without sticking out like a sore thumb. The design brand Travis Matthews has really pushed the envelope of this style of clothing in the golf world, but more global brands like Nike and Adidas are now following their lead due to the overwhelming popularity.

2. New Golf Spikes

Golf spikes used to look like bowling shoes, but that is certainly no longer the case in 2019. The golf shoe industry has been changing over the past decade to include more athletic style footwear that is not only effective, but also much more comfortable than their predecessors. The best bang for your buck would be to go with a tried and true classic shoe like Adidas, Nike, or Under Armour. Spike-less golf shoes are also a trendy option in 2019.

3. Fun Print Golf Shirts

Another trend that has crept its way into 2019 is the concept of printed shirts that feature more of a fun/interesting style. While classic single color shirts will never go out of style, you can really set yourself apart by rocking a shirt with a unique print. This is especially fun for those of you that like to show your personality a little bit through your clothing style. It can also be a fun conversation starter.

4. Plain & Simple Hats

While some of the clothing has become more and more flamboyant (i.e. see printed shirts above), the hat styles have grown more conservative recently. Although many golf stars were rocking those weird Nike printed design hats at The Masters, the golf world collectively rejected that look pretty quickly. Instead, the best bet for a new hat is a simple, single color with a basic logo across the front. Look in your local golf course clubhouse for special deals when looking to buy a new hat.

5. Do Not Wear White Pants

This is more of a fashion warning of what not to do, than what you should do, but it’s definitely advice that should be followed. The trend of wearing bright white golf pants is quickly dying out.  Instead, the golf world is shifting back to the more subtle dark hues like black, grey and navy blue. Despite all the new golf rules that have been instituted by the USGA this year, one thing remains constant and that is that golf is a game built around rules of etiquette. Learning golf etiquette is one of the most important things a young player can do and it’s why etiquette is usually one of the first things discussed in beginner golf clinics. While some golf etiquette rules are likewise becoming outdated, there are still a few rules (listed below) that a golfer should never knowingly break.

Always Yell “Fore” After an Errant Shot

Let’s start with one of the most basic etiquette rules and one that should always be adhered to in order to preserve the safety of other golfers on the course. If you hit a bad shot and you see that your ball is heading in the direction of other, unsuspecting golfers, then you should yell “Fore” as loud as necessary for them to hear you. This common term alerts all nearby golfers to watch out and cover their heads.

Never Hit into The Group Ahead of You

While we are on the subject, you should also never purposely hit into the group ahead of you, even if they are playing extremely slow. It’s one thing if you underestimate yourself and hit the drive of your life and the ball reaches the group ahead of you once, but you should never “send a message” by hitting while they are still in reaching distance. This causes tempers to flare and, yes, has occasionally led to actual physical confrontation. So, don’t do it!

No Talking While Someone is Hitting

Plain and simple, don’t talk or carry on a conversation while another person in your group is trying to hit. Not only is it rude to your playing partner, but it’s also distracting. This is one of the earliest etiquette rules in the book and one of the easiest to follow. And especially do not talk on the cellphone while play is ongoing.

Don’t Walk In Somebody’s Putting Line

This may seem like a trivial etiquette rule to most beginning golfers, but it’s still one to always try and abide by. Golf greens are sensitive patches of turf that can be damaged by our shoes (golf spikes), so simply walking through somebody’s putting line can cause damage to the area of turf that they are about to putt their ball through. This slight damage can cause bouncing and an increased chance of missing the putt.

Repair Your Ball/Divot Marks

As mentioned above, golf courses are simply very well-manicured areas of turf. Courses spend a lot of money on keeping the course in the best shape possible, but each golfer should help do their part by fixing their ball marks/divots on the green and repairing or filling any large divots they cause on the fairways. This is why professional golfers always carry a divot tool in their pockets.

Show Up On time

This doesn’t need an explanation. Showing up on time for your tee-time is crucial and not doing so would be disrespectful to your playing companions. Always aim to be 10-15 minutes early for your tee-time (and earlier if you plan on hitting practice balls).

Shake Hands After The Round

Golf has historically been referred to as a gentleman’s sport, so be a good sport and shake your playing partner’s hands after each round.

Play with Your Child

The best way to get your child interested in the game of golf is to take them with you to the course and spend quality time that will instill fun memories. Kids love to do activities that their friends can join them. If it’s possible, you should sign up your child and three or so friends for a group lesson (obviously ask the other parents first). Not only will the kids be more into it, you can likely get a group and youth discount. Plus, as they continue to grow older, they will have golf playing partners that they can play with for the rest of their lives, which is really something special.
