Gary Woodland _ golf software

Like every major sport, golf has its legendary players. You know, those players that were so much better than their peers that it seemed like they would win almost every tournament they played in. Guys like Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen dominated American golf’s early stages (i.e., 1920s). No golf fan will ever forget the dominant trio of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player in the 1960s and 1970s. Then of course more recently golf fans were treated with the unbelievable skills of Tiger Woods.

Well, thanks in large part to the popularity of Tiger Woods in the 1990s and 2000s, a whole new breed of young golfers was born; guys like Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and the list goes on and on. It leads to the question of whether or not the PGA Tour is as competitive as it’s ever been? It certainly seems that way given the fact that there have been three new major winners in the last six events.

Gary Woodland’s U.S. Open Victory A Sign Of The Times?

After Gary Woodland became the newest major champion with his impressive performance at Pebble Beach, it was impossible not to look back and compare it to Tiger Woods 2000 U.S. Open Championship at that very course. Back in 2000, Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open by shooting a terrific 12 under par. The closest player to him on the leaderboard was Ernie Els, who finished at 3 over par. Yes, Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open Championship that year by a whopping FIFTEEN strokes!

It doesn’t take quantifiable statistics to determine that we will never see that type of victory in a Major ever again. The reason? The talent pool in golf is so much better today than it was even 20 years ago that the competition level is now so high. For those of you that need some numbers, however, check this out: Brooks Koepka is the #1 ranked golfer in the world right now and his scoring average is a low 69.3. Nick Watney is ranked #147 in the world and his scoring average is 70.9. About a stroke and a half difference between #1 and #147. In comparison, Tiger Woods nearly had a five-shot difference between his scoring average and that of the #147 golfer in 2000, which is truly a massive difference in golf.

The point is, the field in each golf tournament these days is much, much deeper than we have ever seen. While it’s still expected that a top 10 or top 25 golfer will win most tournaments, it’s possible that any tour player could win on any given week and it would not be truly shocking to us. This depth in golf talent is leading to some tremendous golf and we’re all benefactors of this youth movement.

Who will win the British Open in a couple of weeks? Personally, I hope it’s Tiger Woods, but I would bet that it will be another new Major winner and one that is under the age of 27. That’s golf in 2019 and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

2019 Golf Fashion Trends _ golf handicap software

Welcome to the 2019 golf season. The weather is nice, the grass is green, and your golf bag is all stocked up and ready to go. The only thing left to do is to find a new golf outfit that will keep you looking fresh when you step onto the first tee. You know what they always say right? If you look good, you’re going to play good. So, let’s take a quick minute and go over five of the latest golf fashion trends to help you (or that golf loving friend or family member) stay fashionable.

1. Crossover Clothing

The term “crossover clothing” essentially refers to clothing that can fulfill multiple social scenarios. Think of clothing that would be appropriate on the golf course, but would also be considered trendy enough to go straight from the course to the local nightlife without sticking out like a sore thumb. The design brand Travis Matthews has really pushed the envelope of this style of clothing in the golf world, but more global brands like Nike and Adidas are now following their lead due to the overwhelming popularity.

2. New Golf Spikes

Golf spikes used to look like bowling shoes, but that is certainly no longer the case in 2019. The golf shoe industry has been changing over the past decade to include more athletic style footwear that is not only effective, but also much more comfortable than their predecessors. The best bang for your buck would be to go with a tried and true classic shoe like Adidas, Nike, or Under Armour. Spike-less golf shoes are also a trendy option in 2019.

3. Fun Print Golf Shirts

Another trend that has crept its way into 2019 is the concept of printed shirts that feature more of a fun/interesting style. While classic single color shirts will never go out of style, you can really set yourself apart by rocking a shirt with a unique print. This is especially fun for those of you that like to show your personality a little bit through your clothing style. It can also be a fun conversation starter.

4. Plain & Simple Hats

While some of the clothing has become more and more flamboyant (i.e. see printed shirts above), the hat styles have grown more conservative recently. Although many golf stars were rocking those weird Nike printed design hats at The Masters, the golf world collectively rejected that look pretty quickly. Instead, the best bet for a new hat is a simple, single color with a basic logo across the front. Look in your local golf course clubhouse for special deals when looking to buy a new hat.

5. Do Not Wear White Pants

This is more of a fashion warning of what not to do, than what you should do, but it’s definitely advice that should be followed. The trend of wearing bright white golf pants is quickly dying out.  Instead, the golf world is shifting back to the more subtle dark hues like black, grey and navy blue. Remember, however, these are just fashion trends and tips. If you enjoy wearing white pants to golf, then you go ahead and do it all you want! Please come back next year to get the scoop on the 2020 golf fashion trends.

golf etiquette _ golf software

Despite all the new golf rules that have been instituted by the USGA this year, one thing remains constant and that is that golf is a game built around rules of etiquette. Learning golf etiquette is one of the most important things a young player can do and it’s why etiquette is usually one of the first things discussed in beginner golf clinics. While some golf etiquette rules are likewise becoming outdated, there are still a few rules (listed below) that a golfer should never knowingly break.

Always Yell “Fore” After an Errant Shot

Let’s start with one of the most basic etiquette rules and one that should always be adhered to in order to preserve the safety of other golfers on the course. If you hit a bad shot and you see that your ball is heading in the direction of other, unsuspecting golfers, then you should yell “Fore” as loud as necessary for them to hear you. This common term alerts all nearby golfers to watch out and cover their heads.

Never Hit into The Group Ahead of You

While we are on the subject, you should also never purposely hit into the group ahead of you, even if they are playing extremely slow. It’s one thing if you underestimate yourself and hit the drive of your life and the ball reaches the group ahead of you once, but you should never “send a message” by hitting while they are still in reaching distance. This causes tempers to flare and, yes, has occasionally led to actual physical confrontation. So, don’t do it!

No Talking While Someone is Hitting

Plain and simple, don’t talk or carry on a conversation while another person in your group is trying to hit. Not only is it rude to your playing partner, but it’s also distracting. This is one of the earliest etiquette rules in the book and one of the easiest to follow. And especially do not talk on the cellphone while play is ongoing.

Don’t Walk In Somebody’s Putting Line

This may seem like a trivial etiquette rule to most beginning golfers, but it’s still one to always try and abide by. Golf greens are sensitive patches of turf that can be damaged by our shoes (golf spikes), so simply walking through somebody’s putting line can cause damage to the area of turf that they are about to putt their ball through. This slight damage can cause bouncing and an increased chance of missing the putt.

Repair Your Ball/Divot Marks

As mentioned above, golf courses are simply very well-manicured areas of turf. Courses spend a lot of money on keeping the course in the best shape possible, but each golfer should help do their part by fixing their ball marks/divots on the green and repairing or filling any large divots they cause on the fairways. This is why professional golfers always carry a divot tool in their pockets.

Show Up On time

This doesn’t need an explanation. Showing up on time for your tee-time is crucial and not doing so would be disrespectful to your playing companions. Always aim to be 10-15 minutes early for your tee-time (and earlier if you plan on hitting practice balls).

Shake Hands After The Round

Golf has historically been referred to as a gentleman’s sport, so be a good sport and shake your playing partner’s hands after each round.

golf lessons _ golf handicap software

If you’re like the majority of amateur golfers, you have probably never had a real golf lesson.  Instead you probably picked up the game and just improved your natural swing by trial and error. Maybe you got a couple of tips from a friend who has played golf for a while who tried to show you the basics of a golf swing. But if you really want to get serious about your golf skills, it’s time to schedule an actual golf lesson with an instructor at your local course. Besides improving your technique, and making you feel better about yourself when playing a round, there are several benefits to getting professional lessons you may not even be aware of. Here are five reasons why you should consider taking a few golf lessons.

You Want To Improve Your Golf Game

Let’s go ahead and knock out the first major reason that amateur golfers should seek out golf lessons: you want to get better at golf! The most tried and true way of improving your golf game is to hire a golf instructor to help improve your swing and provide you with helpful mental tips.

Group Golf Lessons Can Be Affordable

Golf lessons are obviously a luxury and not a required part of playing the game, but that doesn’t mean that they always have to be expensive. Many instructors now offer discounted deals when you agree to purchase a pack of three or more lessons. Golf clubs will also occasionally offer specials for a package of lessons.

Accountability

A golf instructor will hold you accountable for your training and practice. If you are the type of golfer who usually skips the practice range and putting greens in between your golf rounds, then golf lessons will help keep you motivated to practice more. In between each golf lesson, your instructor will give you certain goals that they would like to see you work on before the next training session. These goals make it easier to be more motivated in improving your golf swing.

It Can Be A Good Social Activity

Another affordable way to receive golf lessons is to join a group lesson. In a group lesson, a golf instructor is essentially offering a steeply discounted price per person and will teach a group of five or six golfers at the same time. While this offers less one-on-one time with the instructor, it still provides very helpful information and at a faction of the cost. An added perk of group lessons is that you can meet a lot of other golfers of about your same skill-set and find new playing partners. This is especially redeeming in that you and your new golf friends can improve together.

Course Perks

If you have consistent golf lessons at the same golf course, you will inevitably start to get to know more and more of the workers at the course and develop connections through your instructor. The more you become a “regular” at a golf course, the more perks become available to you. Many golf courses work with their instructors on providing discounted golf rounds for the golf lesson students and also cheaper range ball deals. Overall, there are many perks of golf lessons for both your golf swing and your wallet.

get your kids into golf _ golf software

One of the greatest aspects about golf is that it instills meaningful life lessons and upholds honesty and integrity at the highest level. Golf is a game that teaches its players to respect your playing opponents and actually trust players to call penalties on themselves if they notice a violation. Are there any better values than hard work, patience, respect, and honesty to impart on today’s youth? It’s no surprise that many parents strive to get their kids involved with youth golf programs like The First Tee, that are designed to instill the game of golf and its inherent values to young people. Many golf courses also offer their own youth development programs, or golf day camps. But golf can be expensive to start playing and many youngsters just don’t think it’s very exciting, as opposed to other sports. So below are a few ideas on how to introduce your child, nephew/niece, etc. to the beautiful game of golf and seeing whether they enjoy it or not.

Executive/Par-3 Courses

One really helpful tip is to start your child out at an executive or par-3 only golf course. The shorter holes will make the game more fun for their novice skill-set and will allow them to gain more confidence as a young player. Many executive and Par-3 courses offer incredible youth golfer discounts that allow your child to play for less than $5- or $10-dollars a round.

Junior Golf Programs

As mentioned above, The First Tee is one organization designed strictly for the purposes of increasing youth involvement in the game of golf and that program is expanding into Canada. There are plenty of options for you to get your child introduced to the game. Golf courses all around Quebec offer day camps for children. In fact, Golf Quebec provides a list of every day camp available in the province. Day camps allow your child to develop their skills in a social setting, allowing them to learn the game while forming friendships. This added social dynamic helps them associate positive feelings with the game.

Take Them to A Golf Tournament

Because professional golf tours are aware that young players are the bloodline of their sport, they often make special accommodations to make it accessible to youth involvement. Many PGA Tour events actually provide free admission for children 12 years or younger, and also provide a heavily discounted ticket for teenagers. If you can, take your child to a professional golf tournament and watch them light up when they meet some of the sport’s biggest stars.

Play with Your Child

The best way to get your child interested in the game of golf is to take them with you to the course and spend quality time that will instill fun memories. Yes, it can be frustrating when you are trying to keep up with the pace of play and your child is struggling with learning the game but remember that we all once were beginners at some point too. Don’t hesitate to bring your child with you to the driving range and putting greens as well (note: younger kids really love the putting greens).

Get Their Friends Involved

Kids love to do activities that their friends can join them. If it’s possible, you should sign up your child and three or so friends for a group lesson (obviously ask the other parents first). Not only will the kids be more into it, you can likely get a group and youth discount. Plus, as they continue to grow older, they will have golf playing partners that they can play with for the rest of their lives, which is really something special.

Golf Bag _ golf management software

With golf season finally upon us, it’s important to make sure that your golf bag is fully stocked with the essential items you will need to make your next round unforgettable. This post is designed to provide a quick checklist that you may reference in order to ensure that you have everything you need before hitting the links this year. So without further ado, here are the six essentials you should always have stocked in your golf bag (aside from your golf clubs).

Plenty of Golf Balls

You can’t play golf if you don’t have any golf balls right? Before your next round, make sure you have at least 8-10 golf balls in your bag to ensure that you will have enough to finish the round.  Obviously, if you are a bit erratic with your shots and tend to lose a lot of balls throughout a round, then feel free to throw a few extra sleeves in there just in case. (P.S. It’s okay to buy refurbished golf balls).

Two Golf Gloves

If you plan on playing frequently this golf season, you should seriously consider buying two golf gloves now and storing both in your bag. It might seem unnecessary to buy two golf gloves at the same time, but you won’t think that if you rip a hole in one of your gloves during the middle of the round. It’s much better to have a spare already in your bag then having to rush to buy a replacement you may not like.

Golf Tees

You would be surprised how many people forget about restocking their golf tees only to find out once they are at the course that they are out of tees. If you’re like me and tend to break your wooden tees on nearly every tee shot, think about purchasing a bag of plastic tees that will last longer. Whatever your preference, make sure you have at least a large handful of tees in your bag prior to your round.

Rain Jacket/Umbrella

Unless you live in Arizona or Southern California, it’s inevitable that you will experience some rain while on the golf course. The rain always seems to start when you are the hole farthest away from the clubhouse/shelter too, right? It’s always nice to have a rain jacket or umbrella stored somewhere in your bag for those wet and stormy rounds. Having a rain jacket and/or umbrella will make waiting out the storm much more pleasant and dry.

Divot Tool

The divot tool is one of the most forgotten devices to have with you on the golf course, but it’s critically important to helping keep the course in great shape. It’s common courtesy to fix ball marks that your ball makes on the green, so do yourself and the course a favor and keep this inexpensive tool in your bag.

Sunscreen

It’s simple. Golf is an outdoor sport and it’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultra-violet rays. For that reason, you should always keep sunscreen in your bag. I recommend using a spray-on sunscreen so that you do not have to worry about your hands getting slippery while gripping the club.

Now you’re all set to go have fun, score low, and stay safe out on the course!

Tiger Woods 2019 _ golf software companies

What Tiger Woods accomplished at the 2019 Masters at Augusta National this year was incredible and marked a serious shift in the world of professional golf. The historic come from behind victory officially marked Tiger’s return to prominence. It proved he can still win Major golf tournaments and has since re-ignited his quest to break Jack Nicklaus’ all-time Major wins record of 18. Tiger will attempt to add to his Major total by winning the PGA Championship held at the legendary Bethpage Black golf course in New York from May 16-19.  Let’s take a quick look at some of the pros and cons Tiger is facing in his quest to win the seasons second major.

Pro: Tiger Has Won at Bethpage Before

In 2002, Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in convincing fashion. Bethpage Black is notoriously known as the hardest public golf course in America and it showed in 2002 as Tiger was the only golfer to finish the tournament with an under-par score. In his other three tournaments at Bethpage Black, Tiger has accumulated a 70.2 scoring average and has shown that the course fits his game well.

Con: Stiff Competition

One thing Tiger did not have in 2002 is the caliber of competition that he will face at the 2019 PGA Championship. The game of golf has seen a youth movement over the past decade and these kids can really play. Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Jon Rahm are just a few of the names that could realistically win the PGA Championship this year. Many of these young guns grew up watching Tiger play and will now attempt to slow down his lifelong Major quest.

Pro: Tiger Is Playing Very Well Right Now

Given his impressive win at The Masters, it’s quite obvious that Tiger Woods is playing some really good golf right now. Tiger’s always had some accuracy issues off the tee, so it will be imperative for him to continue to have confidence in his driver at Bethpage Black. If Tiger can continue finding the fairway with his driver like he did at Augusta, he will be in a very good position to take homeb his 16th Major title.

Con: Driving Accuracy Is Crucial

One of the signature designs of Bethpage Black that makes it so difficult are the bunkers that cross the fairways, thus creating very small landing areas for tee shots. With these bunkers, golfers have to not only be accurate, but also have to be precise with their distances. This is very difficult even for the pros and it shows in that players find the fairway bunkers at Bethpage Black at a rate 30% higher than the tour average.

Pro: He’s Tiger Freaking Woods

Honestly, this is Tiger Woods and it makes no sense to doubt him when he’s motivated, healthy, and chasing greatness. Although it’s very difficult and rare for a golfer to win back-to-back majors, it would be foolish to doubt him at this point. Whatever happens, it will be extremely fun to watch the drama play out at Bethpage Black very soon.

Young People Golf Courses _ golf software

Golf has long been considered an “older person’s” sport and there is definitely some truth to it. If you were to go to your local golf course, you would likely see a large amount of baby-boomer aged (or older) individuals enjoying their afternoon drinks and clubhouse chats. But if golf wants to continue to grow its market size and popularity, it should focus on attracting more young people to the game, and that all starts with the modernizing of the golf course experience. Below are a just a few of the many changes that golf courses should look at implementing to broaden their customer age range.

Create an Inexpensive Beginner Golf Package

Golf is an expensive sport. The cost for a beginner can be off-putting, especially if they are not confident that they will enjoy themselves. It would be helpful for courses to host inexpensive golf camps targeted directly for individuals aged 30 and below. Included in the golf camp could be four group lessons, a golf glove from the clubhouse, free use of rental clubs, a free drink at the course restaurant/bar, and one free round of golf at the end. This type of package would expose the beginner golfer to all aspects of the course: practice facilities, clubhouse, food and beverage, and the actual course itself. By providing a glimpse of all the great experiences one can have at the course, it increases the odds of a beginner returning.

Drinks & Music On the Range

One of the most successful golf advancements in the past few years has been the explosion of TopGolf. TopGolf is essentially a driving range that is outfitted with neon lights, music, and full bars. It appeals to the younger generation by offering a fun social atmosphere. Well why can’t that same concept be applied at a local golf course? Many younger people would be attracted to going to the course and hitting balls if there was enjoyable music and fresh cocktails/craft beer available within walking distance. A course can market this on social media as an alternative to the classic happy hour.

Relaxed Dress Code

There is a reason why many companies are shifting to a more casual dress code these days and it’s because the millennial and younger generations are calling for it. Golf courses need to stay with the times and allow golfers to wear shorts, t-shirts and normal shoes if they want. I get that this goes against many of the traditions of golf, but overly formal attire at work and on the golf course is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Accept it, don’t fight it.

Ladies

The common perception of golf has long been that it’s seen as not only an older person’s sport, but an old man’s sport. In order to maximize the game’s exposure and to ensure future generations will enjoy the game, more has to be done to encourage women to take up golf. From a marketing perspective, why limit yourself to half the market, right? Offering women’s only groups, wine tastings on the patio, and Instagram worthy interior design inside the women’s locker rooms are good places to start. Many younger women enjoy the concept of TopGolf as well, so it would be wise to begin making your course more appealing to younger women.

There are endless ways a course can appeal to the younger market these days. It’s important to remember the values and traditions that make golf great at the same time. For you experienced golfers, please also remember that we were all once beginner golfers and how intimidating it could be early on.

Female Golfer Stretching _ golf management software

For many golfers, stretching is the last thing on their mind when they arrive to the golf course. Golf is a leisure sport, so why would anybody need to stretch anyway, right? Well, if you want to quickly improve your game and help ensure that you can continue to play pain free later in life, it’s important to add a quick pre-round stretching routine today. Please note that all of us have unique bodies so it’s important to choose and adjust stretches to whatever feels most comfortable to you. The routine listed below is a good place to start and should take less than three minutes.

Step One: Get the Blood Flowing

Surely you have experienced the feeling of your body being “cold” or “tight” on the first tee at some point or another. This is because most golfers do not take the time to simply get their blood flowing a little bit prior to starting their round. Instead of waiting three or four holes to be “warmed up”, start your round strong by feeling awake and ready. The first step is to perform eight body-weight squats. To perform this, stand with your feet at approximately shoulder length apart and simply squat downwards until your thighs are almost parallel to the ground. This will help awaken your legs and back and will start to get the blood flowing throughout your body.

Step Two: Do the Twist

After performing the 8 body-weight squats, it’s time to continue working your way up your body’s muscle groups. The back is one of the most important body areas for golfers because a golf swing requires rotation of the spine and associated muscles. In fact, it’s common for golfers to develop back soreness after a round of golf or practice session. To help warm up the back, put your arms out in front of you with your elbows bent in slightly.  Then just rotate your body from side to side for 20-30 seconds. You can even grab a golf club and hold it out in front of you to help provide added stability.

Step Three: Shake It Out

Now moving up to your arms and shoulders, perform another 20-30 seconds shaking out each arm. The best way to do this is to swing your arms/shoulders down towards your side and then up over your head, almost like you are performing a butterfly stroke in swimming. Do this forward for a few times, then reverse it and perform it the opposite direction. Lastly, let your arms just dangle to the side and shake them lightly to help loosen them up and let out any extra tension.

Step Four: Wrist Bends

Now focusing on strictly your hands and wrists, hold one arm out straight from your body. With the other arm, grab your outstretched hand and gently bend it backwards (i.e., towards you) at the wrist for seven seconds. You should feel this stretching out your forearms. After the seven seconds, slowly release your hand and move the wrist in a circular motion to again help relieve any built-up tension. Do this for each hand/wrist.

Step Five: Neck Rolls

Last but not least, loosen up your neck by performing five slow circular rolls of your head/neck clockwise and then five counter-clockwise. At this point you should be feeling less anxious and more ready to pound your opening drive down the fairway. Have a nice round!

USGA Golf Rules 2019 _ golf handicap software

The United States Golf Association (USGA), which is essentially the controlling entity for the rules of golf, made quite a stir in the golf world this year when they instituted several major rule changes. These rule changes officially went into effect on January 1, 2019 and are designed to speed up the pace of play for us amateur golfers. In theory, it sounds like a great idea because we all hate having to deal with a slow pace of play that can lead to 5+ hour rounds on the weekends. But how will these rule changes affect your game? With the weather finally warming up, we’re all anxious to get back out onto the course. However, if you intend to follow the sport’s new rules, now would be a good time to get a refresher on the key rule changes implemented over the winter. Let’s take a look at the most important rule changes that you should know before your next round.

No Need To Remove The Flagstick While Putting

This is the rule change that has been the most talked about so far. It’s a substantial change in that there is no longer a penalty to putt the ball with the flagstick still in the hole. Yes, now you can just ram the ball in and let it bounce off the flagstick and (hopefully) in the hole. Some professional players have already begun taking advantage of this rule change. For example, Adam Scott has been putting lights out this year and credits a lot of his newfound putting confidence to leaving the flagstick in. The USGA believes allowing players to keep the flagstick in will, in turn, speed up the pace of play as there will no longer be delays of removing and replacing the flagstick. I personally will continue to remove the flagstick, but it’s very liberating for players to now have the choice.

Drop The Ball From Knee Height

This rule has changed several times over the course of golf history, but the USGA finally seems to have gotten the right idea now. Whenever you need to take a drop now in 2019, you may drop the ball from knee height. This lowers the required height, as it was previously dropped at approximately shoulder height. The rule is designed to prevent the likelihood of a dropped ball rolling out of the designated relief area and thus requiring another drop. Again, this is a rule change designed to increase the pace of play, but it can be done in a way that can give you better lies on relief drops.

Only Three Minutes To Find Lost Ball

One of the key things that can slow down the pace of play significantly is when a player continues to search for their lost ball for far too long. We have all played with that person who refuses to admit their ball is lost, despite searching for almost 10 minutes. The new rule reduces the amount of time to find a lost ball from five minutes to three minutes. While the rule says that if you have not found the ball within three minutes, that it’s deemed lost, hopefully your playing partners don’t actually have you on a time watch.

Fixing Damage On The Putting Greens

Good news, it’s no longer a penalty stroke for fixing damage on the green that is in your putting line.  If you’re like me, you have probably been doing this even prior to the official rule change because you don’t want your putt getting bounced off line by a ball mark or spike damage.  This one probably doesn’t affect most of you, but it’s another notable rule change to keep in mind as you head back out to your local course this spring!
