Nobody likes a slow player in golf. Just take PGA star Brooks Koepka comments regarding long rounds when he stated, “Five and half hours to play golf is a long time. Everybody’s going to get bored.” Anybody who has been stuck in a 5-plus hour round before can agree with Koepka’s stance on slow play. So what are some strategies that you can implement to help ensure your next round is completed within four hours? Below are ideas that you can immediately implement to speed up your pace of play and help avoid those dreaded long rounds.

Play First Thing In The Morning

The easiest and most effective way of ensuring that you will complete your round in under four hours is to secure an early morning tee time. If you can get the first tee time of the day, that is even better. The reasoning behind this strategy is that when you are the first group of the day, there will be nobody ahead of you that you are forced to wait on. So by being the first tee time of the day, you control your destiny as far as the timing of your round.

Develop a Quick Pre-Shot Routine

One of the most common habits of slow golfers is their lack of a consistent pre-shot routine. If you want to speed up your round a bit, developing a pre-shot routine that takes about 25-30 seconds from the moment you’ve selected what club you’re going to hit, to stepping up to the ball, getting lined up, and then ultimately completing your swing. If you can keep this pre-shot routine to under 30 seconds and remain consistent with it each time, it will not only speed up your round, but it will also help keep you in a good rhythm.

Allow No More Than Five Minutes Looking For A Lost Ball

A real round momentum killer is when a member of the group hits a ball near out of bounds or into an area of thick rough/desert (depending on the type of course). If you hit a ball that appears unfindable, don’t be that player that looks around for their ball for 10-plus minutes. If your ball is lost, give yourself a maximum of five minutes to look for it before moving on to dropping another ball and continuing your round. On that note, it’s always important to hit a provisional shot if you fear that your ball may be lost or hit out-of-bounds.

Be More Generous With The “Gimme Putts”

The final tip that can quickly speed up a round is to be more generous with giving “gimme putts” to your playing partners. Unless you’re betting big time money or have a lot of skins riding on that 3-foot putt, don’t be super stingy with providing gimme putts. Allowing gimme putts helps speed up a round more than you would think. Don’t believe me? Give it a try in your next round and find out.

Play Ready Golf

This final tip is one of the most classic expeditious golf rules and is one every player should know. Playing “ready golf” is simple. If you’re ready to play, go ahead and hit instead of waiting to follow the proper/professional rules of who hits next.

While there are endless ways that you can speed up your round and ensure a four hour or less round, the tips listed above are some of the easiest and most effective tips that you can implement in your next round. Enjoy!

Club de Golf Canton continues proud 40+ year tradition

Canton offers excellent playing conditions, a friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere in Warwick

While the 2020 golf season got off to a later start than usual, well-run courses like Club de Golf Canton were able to reopen without missing a beat. That’s what comes with Canton’s 40 years of experience in running a club built on a reputation of high quality conditions, a hospitable environment and of course, its great location.

Canton is a semi-private course that hits the right balance of making its members feel special, while making visitors feel welcome with every visit.

Whether you attend Canton as a member, playing as a guest, organizing a business meeting or simply to enjoy a meal in the clubhouse, the friendly staff makes everyone feel welcome.

Let’s take a look at what Canton has to offer.

Breathtaking course with unique challenges

It all starts with the stunning view you get of Mont Gleason when playing on Canton’s course. The par-71 course has a slightly hilly landscape and narrow river winding through the course. This presents a challenge for golfers of all levels, as they try to navigate their shots through the elements of nature.

canton course map

Run by general manager Luc Fillion, Canton features all the hallmarks of Quebec Golf.

Even though the course is semi-private and run with high standards, it’s still a very affordable course to play. Tee times for a full 18-hole game start for as little as $30 with taxes included and you can find discounts widely available on minutegolf throughout the week. Canton also offers lower prices if you choose to play after 1 PM and an even greater discount if you tee off after 4 PM.

Environmentally friendly

Canton has made a commitment to helping preserve its pristine environment by limiting its use of herbicides, pesticides and insecticides. Their product use plan is overseen by an agronomist, and they maintain a register of which products they use. However, Canton doesn’t just comply with law to meet standards; they set their own heightened standards. They choose to do more than the bare minimum in meeting standards expected of golf clubs. Their rigorous monitoring ensures that regulations are respected and the course’s landscape is preserved.

One area of note is their commitment to water preservation. Due to its ideal location, a stream crosses or runs adjacent to eight holes on the course. Canton is adamant in ensuring they begin cutting their grass at least three metres from the stream. They also ask golfers to play their ball before that area to preserve the course’s wildlife habitat.

The course also installed a water treatment system in 2011 to preserve the stream that runs along its course. On top of that their signage is made from recycled materials and they commit to planting a dozen trees each year.

All of this goes hand in hand with Canton’s belief that respecting the environment goes hand in hand with both golfer experience and maintaining the beauty of its course.

Proud 40+ year tradition

Canton’s beginnings go back to 1975 when the club was first founded and construction of the 18-hole course was a process that took several years. The club officially celebrated its opening in September 1977 with the Warwick Open tournament. A whopping 420 players took part in the tournament on the brand new 12-hole course (the remaining six holes were completed afterwards). Finally, the clubhouse was ready for members in time for the 1978 golf season.

Since then, it’s been all about Canton running its course and clubhouse with passion and grace.

Explore Canton for yourself

Besides its golf course, Canton has plenty more to offer, including a reception hall with a 200-person capacity, a fully stocked boutique and of course, its inviting on-site restaurant. One quick tee time booking with Minutegolf and you’ll see just what Canton can offer.

Five Great Ways That Golf Courses Can Attract New Golfers

Golf courses are always looking for innovative ways to attract new golfers and help grow the game. While the coronavirus pandemic has presented many challenges this year, it has created a unique opportunity for golf courses to market to new golfers.  Given the social distance and quarantine rules that have been in place for months now, one of the best options for people to get outdoors and get some exercise nowadays is to play golf. So how can golf courses take advantage of this new wave of interest to attract new golfers and create more business? Below are five sure-fire ways to help attract newbie golfers in 2020.

1. Social Media Management

Social media is one of the most powerful marketing tools available to businesses today. For that reason, it’s imperative that all golf courses have their own social media profiles (Instagram, Facebook, etc.).  If a golf course is active on social media, they can quickly grow a large following. There is a large market of young golfers that are growing interested in the sport and social media is the most effective way to target promotions to that younger market.

2. Host Free Beginner Golf Lessons

Another great way to attract new golfers is to offer free lessons for beginners. Hosting a one hour free lesson once a month is very attractive to golfers who want to get a taste of the sport before making a big investment in clubs and other equipment. Each month can cover different topics like swing fundamentals, putting, chipping, etiquette, etc.. This is one of the best ways to turn prospective interest into new golfers.

3. New Golfer Memberships/Rewards

Many golf courses have membership opportunities that come with perks such as member tournaments, discounted rates, and preferred tee times. An innovative way for golf courses to attract new members is to advertise special memberships for new golfers. Not only will these memberships be enticing as a way for the new player to save money, but it will also help them feel as part of the golf community at your golf course. This option definitely creates loyalty between the new golfer and your golf course.

4. Pre-Paid Practice Range/Balls

One thing that new golfers need to do a lot of is practice. Golf can be a very difficult sport to learn, so it’s a wonderful idea for golf courses to offer pre-paid practice range cards that allow the player to save money by pre-paying and/or buying in bulk. Many golf courses actually make a higher profit on selling practice/range balls than they do on actual green fees. This is a deal that can also be offered to more seasoned golfers, as they will surely appreciate the savings opportunity as well.

5. Video Meet-ups For New Golfers

The idea of video conference meet-ups and social groups seemed so bizarre until the pandemic hit this year and all of a sudden Zoom and Google Hangouts became commonplace. Some players may not feel comfortable coming to the golf course for in-person meetings, so why not host a video meet-up for new golfers to get to know each other and learn more about golf together. After a few group meet-ups, encourage the new members to come to the course and practice together.

With these suggestions, golf courses will be attracting new golfers in no time!

cardinal hole 6

The club was founded in 1955 by Maurice Cardinal, who was also the course’s architect, along with Léopold Benoit. After starting as a nine-hole course, nine more holes were added in 1958. Ten years later, Mr. Cardinal became the course’s sole owner and renamed the course in his name, after operating as  Club de Golf Ste-Dorothée.

The club has been family run from the beginning, as Mr. Cardinal passed the course onto his kids. His son, Guy Cardinal is now the course’s owner, and it remains a family run business, with his sons Marc-André and Philippe now the course’s Club Manager and Superintendent respectively. His daughter Sarah also helps run the clubhouse.

Easy Commute, Easy Reservation

Le Cardinal’s semi-private course is very accessible and easy to get to, just 15 minutes north of Montreal, just west of the 440 highway in Laval. While the course has a loyal membership base, visitors are always welcome to play a round and booking a tee time is simple with minutegolf. Just search in the Montreal - Laval region, select Cardinal and add your preferred date and time.

Excellent Value

While Cardinal offers a lot in excellent playing conditions, a friendly staff and a variety of well maintained facilities, tee times start as low as $34.79. Golf cart rentals can be added on for an additional $19.14 per person. The best part is, your tee time price can be even lower if you regularly check Minutegolf’s ‘Deals’ section, as Minutegolf offers several discounted prices throughout the week.

New Golf Etiquette: How Covid-19 Has Changed Golf’s Etiquette Rules

Golf is a game steeped in tradition. One of those traditions is the idea of an unwritten code of conduct amongst players, otherwise known as the rules of etiquette. Experienced golfers will tell you that the unofficial rules of etiquette are almost just as important as the official rules of golf themselves. But with the world in 2020 changing at an unprecedented rate due to the Novel Covid-19 virus, the rules of golf etiquette are having to change as well in order to follow social distancing and non-contact guidelines that are now in place. This article takes a look at some of the most notable rules of golf etiquette and explains the proper way to adhere to them in midst of the pandemic.

1. The Post-Round Handshake

Pre-Covid: One of the earliest and most honored rules of etiquette is for each player in a group to remove their hats and shake the hands of each other player in the group at the conclusion of the 18th hole.

Now: Contact between persons is generally advised against by healthcare professionals due to the ability to transmit the virus through touch, so the proper etiquette now is to implement either an “air fist bump” or just a respectful head nod in each other’s direction without coming too close.

2. Tending the Flagstick

Pre-Covid: Although the rule change in 2019 allowed for flagsticks to remain in the cup while putting without incurring a penalty, many people still preferred removing the flagstick from the cup while putting or having somebody “tend the flag” on longer distance putts.

Now: When golfing nowadays, it’s a strongly advised guideline for no players to touch or remove the flagstick. So, this one is pretty simple nowadays: Don’t touch the flagstick!

3. Raking the Sand Bunkers

Pre-Covid: One of the first rules of golf etiquette that was always taught to new golfers was to remember to properly rake the bunker after hitting a shot out of the sand. This was always done to ensure that players behind you on the course would get the same type of lie that you received (assuming you properly raked the bunker).

Now: If you have played golf in the past few months, you may have noticed that there are no rakes in any of the bunkers anymore. The new rule allows you to move the ball to a more favorable lie if it happens to come to rest in a previous divot or footprint. I for one kind of enjoy this new rule!

4. Grabbing Other Player’s Clubs From The Green

Pre-Covid: It was always a nice gesture to help pick-up another player’s clubs (especially elderly players who have difficulty bending over) that were left on or near the green (i.e., pitching wedge, putter cover, etc.) if you finished the hole while they were still putting out.

Now: Similar to the flagstick rule, unfortunately it is strongly advised against picking up somebody else’s club and handing it to them nowadays. While it remains a nice gesture, the risk of exposure from touching the equipment makes this rule of etiquette obsolete for the foreseeable future.

5. High Fives/Celebrations

Pre-Covid: Imagine a playing partner sinking a 40-foot putt or chipping in from off the green, your first inclination may be to high-five them or some other celebratory gesture to show your excitement.

Now: Much like the post-round handshake being banished, high-fives or other celebratory physical touching is highly discouraged. “Air fives” or fist-pumps are still encouraged. So still get excited, just do it responsibly!

golf gifts _ golf handicap software

Father’s Day is fast approaching and if you’re like many of us, you still haven’t thought of what kind of gift to give your father this year. It’s okay, however, there is still time to get your father an amazing gift that will truly make this Father’s Day one of the most memorable ones yet.  Continue reading below to discover five must-have golf inspired gift ideas that you can do in 2020.

Buy a Round of Golf

If your father has a certain day of the week that he likes to play golf, you can go ahead and pre-pay for a round at one of his favorite courses and surprise him with it on Father’s Day. Every golfer loves free green fees, so a pre-paid round of golf is sure to put a smile on his face. A great and easy resource to browse discounted tee times for multiple courses at once is minutegolf.ca. It’s hard to find a better gift than that for a golf loving father.

Golf Lessons

Does your father love playing golf, but then often comes home after each round complaining about how poorly he played? Well help your father out by purchasing him a set of golf lessons from a local golf instructor. Again, you can find many amazing deals for golf lessons through your local course pro shops and websites. This is a gift that will benefit your father year-round by helping improve his game.

Some New Golf Gear

Let’s be honest, most fathers could use a little help in keeping their wardrobe up to date with the latest fashion trends and that includes their golf attire. Fortunately, the golf clothing industry is booming at the moment and caters to golfers of all ages. If you want your father to be looking cool, and staying cool, on the course this season, check out some of the clothing from brands like Travis Matthews, Under Armour, Nike, or Peter Millar, which can often be found in your local course’s pro shop.

Shoe Cleaning & Spike Change

For a more inexpensive gift idea, consider taking your father’s golf shoes to the local course pro shop and asking them for a good cleaning and a spike change. Most courses provide this service ranging from anywhere between $10-$25. Changing golf spikes is one thing that most golfers often overlook, despite the fact that having new spikes on your shoes is what provides most of our balance throughout our golf swing. This will be an unexpected gift idea, but one that your father will absolutely appreciate.

Customized Golf Balls

If you want to give your father a tangible gift that he will have fun opening up this year, a dozen customized golf balls are always a fun gift idea. Does your father have a nickname? A favorite saying? His own business? Whatever it is that makes your father unique, you can have it printed onto his favorite kind of golf ball through many different custom golf ball websites. This gift is something he will surely cherish and he will think of you every time he tees-up one of his new custom golf balls.

Five Things Golfers Should Know About The New World Handicap System | golf handicap software

If you are a frequent golfer, you’re well aware of the term “handicap” when it comes to quantifying your skill level. For example, a person who on average shoots a 90 on a par 72 course would be considered a “+18” handicap, as this would reflect that they typically shoot around 18 strokes over par. If you typically shoot 72 on a par 72, then you would be considered a zero handicap (otherwise known as a “scratch” golfer). But how does one determine their handicap?

Well there are currently six different handicap systems in the world, so it can be a bit confusing depending on the system you or your local course uses. To help avoid this confusion, golf is implementing a universal handicapping system known as the “World Handicap System” (WHS). As golf is a game played all around the world, it seems logical. But what should you as an amateur know about this new system? Well here are five key items to know about the new WHS.

1. The WHS Launched in January 2020

Yes, to the surprise of many who are just hearing this, the WHS launched in the United States and Canada in January of this new year. Rest assured, you’ll have your WHS handicap index available to you once golf season starts, as courses around the country will be implementing it this year.

2. All Handicap Indexes Will Reflect an 18-hole Handicap

Under the former Canada Handicap System, it was possible for players to have both a nine-hole handicap index and 18-hole handicap index. Under the World Handicap System, a player will only have an 18-hole handicap index.  This helps ensure that each player has only one true Handicap and helps prevent players with only a nine-hole handicap from being at a disadvantage when playing in an 18-hole tournament. This move ensures every player is on a more even playing field, which is truly what the World Handicap System wants to achieve.

3. The WHS is More Accurate Than Other Systems

Under the WHS, the handicap index is determined based on only 8 of the last 20 rounds that you’ve posted to the system. This allows for more current, low scores to have a larger effect on the index and thus keeping sandbaggers (i.e., people who purposely try to keep a higher handicap than their actual skill level dictates) at bay… hopefully.

4. Weather and Course Conditions Will Adjust Your Posted Score

Have you ever played a course in high winds or rainy conditions that drastically affected your score? Well under the WHS, the system will take into account the course conditions at the time that you played and accurately make overnight adjustments to ensure that it doesn’t balloon that pristine handicap you’ve been working so hard to establish. This really is a great (and practical) new feature.

5. Just Another Reason to Finally Establish Your Handicap

While golfers in Canada have always had the Golf Canada Score Center to establish their handicap, not every golfer has taken advantage of the service because of the confusion and requirements to establish an accurate handicap index. The WHS makes the task much more streamlined and allows golfers to establish and maintain a handicap with ease.

If you don’t already have an established handicap and aren’t currently a member at any golf club, you can register directly with Golf Canada. Have fun, and no sand-bagging!

Caddyshack | Top 5 Golf Movies To Watch

With golf courses remaining closed for the time being, many of us are going to be watching A LOT of movies over the spring. With us missing golf so much, why not throw in some golf movies? Today we are going to discuss some of the greatest golf movies ever made and provide you with a quick reference list when you need a movie suggestion. Now some of these movies are more serious than others, but they are all certainly all-time classics. If you select a movie from one of the five listed below, there is no way you can go wrong. So get your popcorn ready while we go over the top five golf movies to watch while stuck indoors.

5. The Greatest Game Ever Played

This movie depicts a young, talented golfer in the early 20th century that struggles to gain respect or even a real shot given his low economic means in a sport that was reserved only for the privileged in that time. Starring Shia Labeouf (pre-meltdown), this movie provides amazing acting and cinematography.

4. Happy Gilmore

If you’re in the mood for a comedy, you cannot go wrong with ‘Happy Gilmore’. A hockey player (who can’t skate) becomes a professional golfer in order to try and save his grandmother’s house from being foreclosed. Led by his natural long-drive ability, goofy swing, and legendary coach (“Chubbs”), Happy Gilmore tries to score low and defeat his nemesis, Shooter McGavin. This movie is sure to take you to your happy place.

3. The Short Game (Documentary)

‘The Short Game’ is a documentary film that follows eight highly talented junior golfers and their stories as they all gather to compete at the 2012 U.S. Kids Golf World Championships at the fabled Pinehurt Golf Club. This is a SXSW Film Festival award winning documentary. It will, however, make you feel bad about your own golf game once you see just how good these little kids are.

2. Tin Cup

Kevin Costner is the master of sports movies and his character in ‘Tin Cup’ only further proves that. ‘Tin Cup’ is about an uber-talented driving range pro named Roy McAvoy (ironically close to Rory McIlroy, right?) that could never just get out of his own way to achieve golf glory. Can he turn play it safe just one time in order to win? Or will he continue going for it and risking it all? This is seriously a classic golf movie and must watch.

1. Caddyshack

What else were you expecting to be listed as number one here? ‘Caddyshack’ is the epitome of golf movies and has yet to be topped since it first hit theatres in 1980. There are too many memorable characters at Bushwood Country Club to go into detail here, but with actors like Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield, you are sure to be laughing throughout this cinematic classic.

Honorable Mentions: Legend of Bagger Vance; Bobby Jones: The Stroke of Genius; Three Little Beers

Three Signs That You’re Ready to Upgrade to A New Driver | golf management software

One of the most famous golf quotes ever is the classic, “You drive for show, but you putt for dough.”  While this alludes to the fact that our golf scores are most highly dictated by our putting abilities (which is actually pretty accurate), sometimes it’s just nice to smash one off the tee… even if it is just for show. Of course that leads to another famous golf quote from the movie Tin Cup that states sometimes you just “have to let the big dog eat.” But what if you’re not hitting your driver well or you’re far more confident hitting iron off the tee? Well it may be time for you to invest in a new driver.

Below are the three telltale signs that you’re ready to upgrade to a new driver. Do any of these sound familiar to you? If so, it’s time to upgrade.

1. You Lack Confidence In Your Driver On The Tee-box

If you find yourself nervous to tee off on the first tee box because of the usual crowd of people that tend to gather near first tee-boxes, then it’s obvious you need to upgrade to a new driver.  There is no reason with all the different styles and technologies available in drivers today that you should have the jitters on the number one tee box.

Instead, you should feel ready and confident that you’re going to show off by hitting a nice, booming drive right down the middle of the fairway. A new driver can give you that confidence.

2. Your Driver is Over 5+ Years Old

Unless you absolutely crush one of your older drivers and have great confidence in it, you should be upgrading your driver about every five years at a minimum. While a putter may be reliable for an entire golf lifetime, a driver cannot be.

Drivers, more than any other club in golf, are improved constantly with technology advancements and designs that optimize speed, distance and control. Simply put, if you’re playing with an older driver, you are missing out on an opportunity to immediately improve your game.

3. You Don’t Use a Headcover on Your Driver

This may sound silly, but hear me out. If you don’t bother protecting your driver by using a headcover when you’re off the course, then you’re risking damage to your driver at any given moment. This disregard for potential damage and/or scratches reveals that there is no emotional investment in that driver. If you don’t care about your driver enough to protect it, then it’s clear that you need a different driver.

Once you upgrade to a new driver that gives you confidence and allows you to hit bombs off the tee, you’ll want to guard it with your life. That’s the kind of relationship you deserve with your driver and one that you’ll have if you upgrade to a driver that’s a perfect fit for your game and swing.

If you fit into one of the categories above, we recommend taking some time and visiting your local pro shop (or shopping online if possible) and browse the driver selections. Ask for a “demo driver” to test out on the range if you’d like. There are many types of drivers out there so you just have to find one that fits you best!

Which Golf Clubs Should You Have In Your Golf Bag | golf software

As a golfer reading this, you are likely aware that the rules of golf permit each player to carry no-more than 14 clubs in their bag for any given round. Having a limit on the number of clubs allows golfers to use strategic planning to determine which combination of clubs they will carry in their bag. Some of the important things to consider when determining which 14 clubs you have in your bag are: your playing ability; (2) the course layout/condition; and (3) confidence.

If you’re unsure whether you are carrying the right clubs in your bag, we have a quick guide here to provide a quick reference to help you decide.

The Common 12 Clubs

Most amateur golfers carry the same standard 12 clubs in their bag which are:

  • (1) driver;
  • (2) 3-wood
  • (3) 5-wood
  • (4-11) 3-iron through 9-iron
  • (12) putter

The final two clubs are generally a combo of pitching wedges with differing lofts. Just because that’s the common combination, doesn’t mean that you need to follow it. You may want to consider the following three items when determining how to customize your 14-club combination.

The Three Wedge System

If you’re blessed with power off the tee and/or with your irons, it should allow you a little more freedom in deciding which clubs you carry. For example, players that can crush their drivers do not often have to carry a 5-wood, so they’d rather keep three different wedges (i.e., 46-degree, 52-degree and 58-degree). This is sometimes referred to as a “three wedge system.” The reason is that on most amateur courses, a big hitter off the tee will hit the majority of their shots from within 150 yards on their second shot on par 4’s.

Even if you’re not the biggest hitter off the tee, if you know you’re playing on a shorter course with many shots within 150 yards, consider the three-wedge system.

The Hybrid v. Iron Conundrum

For many amateur golfers, having to hit a 3-iron or 4-iron is a terrifying experience. If that resonates with you, don’t worry. The lower lofted irons are commonly known as the hardest clubs to hit for the majority of golfers (even the pros). If you struggle with these clubs, consider switching over to hybrids and carry multiple hybrids that you hit relatively the same distance as your 3 and 4-irons. The hybrids are typically easier to hit for amateur golfers and thus will give you more confidence in those longer distance iron type shots.

Specialty Clubs

The last item to consider are those specialty clubs that you sometimes see in commercials or your local pro shops. One of the most popular specialty clubs is “the chipper.” Essentially the chipper is a very low lofted wedge that looks more like a putter. The chipper is designed to produce a natural bump and run shot, while allowing the player to make a simple putting stroke.

Final Tip

Whatever combination you decide on, just make sure it instills confidence in your game. Good luck!
